From a backyard on Federal Hill I watched as a star shot across the night sky over Rt 10. It was the mid-80’s and I hadn’t been living in RI for very long. At that time, I was in a place I really didn’t want to be. I could’ve wished on that star for anything but I wished for contentment. A couple years later God answered that prayer.
Contentment.
What a gift from Him to us.
Contentment releases the ability to truly enjoy life, to relax, to let go, to stop striving, and to enjoy whatever comes our way - even when we are where we don’t want to be, or we are facing an outcome that is not what we’d hoped and believed for.
Through the years, I’ve learned He never moves without purpose. Whatever happens in my life, happens because He has a purpose for it. My part is to accept and trust and try not to complain . . . not always easy.
Psalm 73:26 is a powerful verse that says, "My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."
He is my Portion forever.
Mine forever.
I think it’s impossible to grasp what that fully means. But for me, I am encouraged to believe we can have as much of Him as we want – but it’s up to us and what we’re willing to leave behind or push aside to receive more.
When we ask for more of Him, He will never push us away “…He said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5) We are simply asking Him for something He is already wanting to give us.
During your fast, don’t be satisfied with just pushing aside your plate, ask Him if there is anything else to push away; if there is anything in the way. Because God is the best Portion.
“He satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.” (Psalm 107:9)
